The True-Sayana Engine

I. Phase space and the birth moment

A natal chart can be read as an initial-condition vector in phase space — the same structural idea developed in Modern Science and Astrology. Sensitive dependence on initial conditions (chaos theory) explains why the precise birth moment matters for trajectory, without proving planetary forces on biology.

II. The 1,700-year astronomical drift

Around 285 CE, the tropical (season-locked) and sidereal (star-locked) zodiacs coincided. Precession of the equinoxes (~50 arc-seconds per year) has since opened a gap of roughly 24°13′ in 2026 (Lahiri ayanamsa). Module 1 of the guide teaches this conversion; the engine below animates it on chart data you supply.

III. Calendar history — why Sayana matters

The Government of India's Calendar Reform Committee (1955), chaired by astrophysicist Meghnad Saha, documented drift between traditional panchanga reckoning and seasonal anchors. The Surya Siddhanta instructs future astronomers to apply bija (observational) corrections for solstice drift (ayana-calana). The Nanakshahi calendar reform offers a modern precedent for season-locked civic calendars.

Terminology note: Sanskrit Sayana in calendar literature refers to solar/solstice reckoning. In this engine, the outer ring shows sidereal longitudes plus accumulated ayanamsa — approximately the tropical (season-locked) frame used by Western ephemerides.

IV. Do any current systems account for this shift?

Yes — but the field is split. The precessional gap is standard astronomy; what differs is which frame a school chooses. Three live responses:

1. Western tropical never lost the seasonal anchor — 0° Aries is always the vernal equinox (Ptolemaic tradition). astro.com (Astrodienst) defaults to this frame and produces astronomically correctseason-locked longitudes (Swiss Ephemeris). Use it to cross-check the engine's outer ring at 2026. Limitation relative to full Jyotish: no Vimshottari dasha / nakshatra grid as taught in this guide (see Module 11).

2. Tropical-Vedic synthesis — practitioners such as Sri Yukteswar Giri (The Holy Science, 1894), Ernst Wilhelm (Kala software), and Vic DiCara argue for season-locked rāśis with Vedic algorithms (dashas, yogas, vargas). Method: apply the ~24° correction, then run the same computational toolkit on Sayana longitudes.

3. Archaeoastronomy & calendar reform — researchers including Nilesh Oak, Rupa Bhaty, and the 1955 Calendar Reform Committee (Meghnad Saha) use precession-aware sky models to align ancient textual astronomy with seasons — parallel math, different purpose (dating vs natal work).

Why Lahiri sidereal still dominates:festival panchanga inertia (moving Makar Sankranti / Diwali anchors is socially disruptive), two millennia of sidereal-keyed commentaries, and an internally consistent convention — as long as you never mix tropical software into Vedic rules (Module 1's top beginner error).
