The Three Pillars of Vedic Astrology

12
BHAVAS
Houses
The 12 sectors of life experience — from self to liberation. Each house governs a specific domain: body, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, relationships, transformation, dharma, career, gains, and moksha. The Lagna (1st house) anchors the entire chart to birth time and place.
10
GRAHAS
Planets
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn (the Sapta Grahas) plus the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu (lunar nodes) and sometimes Uranus. Each planet embodies specific energies, karmas, and life themes that it activates wherever it sits and wherever it aspects.
12
RASHIS
Signs
The 12 zodiac signs are the stage on which planets perform. A planet in its own sign is fully empowered; in its exaltation sign it is at peak strength; in debilitation it is weakened; in a friend's sign it is comfortable. The sign colours how a planet expresses its energy.

How the Three Interact

PLANET IN A HOUSE

A planet occupying a house activates that house's themes with the planet's own energy and karmic agenda. Mars in the 7th house brings martial, assertive energy to partnerships. Jupiter in the 10th expands career. Rahu in the 10th intensifies professional ambition obsessively.

PLANET IN A SIGN

The sign modifies how the planet's energy is expressed. Mercury in Virgo (exalted) is precise, analytical, and powerful. Mercury in Pisces (debilitated) becomes vague and scattered. The same planet, opposite expressions. Sign dignity is the amplifier or dampener of the planet's natural energy.

SIGN ON A HOUSE CUSP

The sign occupying a house determines who the lord of that house is. If Scorpio is on the 7th house, Mars rules the 7th — Mars becomes the significator of your relationships. Where Mars sits and how it is aspected determines the quality of partnerships.

HOUSE TYPES

Kendra (1,4,7,10) — pillars of life, strongest. Trikona (1,5,9) — most auspicious, dharma. Upachaya (3,6,10,11) — grow with time. Dusthana (6,8,12) — difficult, transformative. A planet strong in a kendra or trikona gives the best results.
